One of the greatest songwriters of this or any other time guitarist Mige Ure has a
CV that staggers belief. Replacing Gary Moore in Thin Lizzy he would work with
Phil Lynott on the classic rock opera Black Rose and Lynott’s greatest solo
success Yellow Pearl. But it would be with Ultravox that he would achieve his
greatest successes. The massive Vienna (and it’s iconic video) would cement their
reputation as a groundbreaking act who would go on to release 80’s classics
Dancing (With Tears in my Eyes) and The Voice. He would also help write Visage’s
classic Fade to Grey. Then Bob Geldoff got in touch.
Angered by footage of the
Ethiopian famine on the BBC news Geldof and Ure united to write and produce Do
They Know it’s Christmas? Ure modestly claims it was one of the worst songs he
ever wrote and credits the single’s all-star line-up for providing the momentum that
made the song the anthem it is today. He and Geldof would go on to organise the
worldwide Live-Aid concerts and co-ordinate the massive fundraising campaign
that followed. After that he pursed a solo career, won a battle with alcoholism and
released a candid autobiography.
While not an obvious choice for the festival, Midge Ure is still one of the
greatest songwriters around at the moment. Expect his own songs, old classics
and maybe even some of the old hits.
