Out of all the bands that stormed the charts after the Strokes
kicked in the door and near single-handedly revitalised the guitar
music scene there were few that would have believed that the
Kings of Leon would become the international superband they are
today. While the Strokes struggled to replicate the pretty near
perfect Is This It, the White Stripes played second fiddle to Jack
White’s side projects and countless imitators and garage rock revivalists
disappeared into obscurity the Followill Brothers (and
cousin) slowly built up their fan base, culminating in the release
of the massive airplay hit (and UK number one) Sex on Fire.
It was the last song on Because of the Times that would point the
way forward for the KoL - the anthemic Arizona, a song to fill stadiums.
Only by the Night would fulfil this promise and propel them
to the top of their game, rubbing shoulders with U2 and Bruce
Springsteen.
