Carlene Carter’s musical pedigree is beyond reproach – Granddaughter to
Maybelle Carter (of the original Carter Family,) daughter of June Carter and Carl
Smith and the stepdaughter of Johnny Cash. Her career was launched when
Emmy Lou Harris covered her song Easy From Now On in 1978, which bought her
to the attention of the Nashville scene. She recorded with the Rumour and was
credited by Rolling Stone magazine for merging Nashville with contemporary rock & roll.
Over the course of her thirty-year career she has collaborated with Clarence
Clemonds (The E-Street Band), John McFee (the Doobie Brothers) Paul Carrack
(Squeeze) and the Chieftans. Commercially successful in the 80’s with a series of
pop hits, she returned to the Nashville fold when Dwight Yoakham told her that “there is a place for (her) in country music’. She started off the 90’s with a hit duet
and soon found herself presenting VH1’s first country and western hour, the daily
Carlene Carter Show.
Heartfelt, genuine and sometimes controversial Carlene Carter hasn’t shrunk from
the darker side of life and song writing. While remaining true to her heritage she has
carved out her own unique career path and remains one of the few Nashville stars
to reach true crossover appeal without losing her roots.
